Yesterday I wrote a blog on setting reminder alarms every day to force positive action by ones self and to trigger the creation of healthy habits. One alarm that I failed to mention is the one that I set at 9:00 PM each night, which is typically an hour or two before my bed time.
“Did you make them proud?”
I think we all struggle with the balance of work and life. Some have figured out the “secret sauce” to making it all work, while others struggle. Keep in mind that it is okay if you are either of these people. Life is about learning as you go. For me, I have found that I, as well as many others, are trying every day diligently to become better individuals both personally and professionally. I do not think anyone in their right mind wants to take steps backward, although we all do from time to time.
I have asked myself recently, who do I do this for? Why do I work and strive to be better? For my Family? For me? For clients? For both? For everyone? Something that offers me perspective at the end of each day is this alarm, set to a favorite tune by the man who adopted me as a child. The message is simple, “Did you make them proud?”. Post-alarm I sit and consider whether I did the best I could and whether those people, living or dead would be proud. (In case you are wondering the alarm tune I use is “My Way” by Frank Sinatra.)
So, the question is, who do you do it for, and would they be proud? – JDL
